There are two lines of Nespresso machines, which is important to understand as the pods one uses to make the espresso with are not compatible.
The original line focues soley on espresso and has been around long enough to have non-branded products enjoying some degree of compatiblity. This has led to lower prices.
The Vertuo line is newer and allows for other choices beyond espresso to be made (5 sizes in all). There are barcodes on each pod that automate the selection process for you but also limits the abilty to get non-branded pods. This means higher prices for pods.

Remember to check which line you are buying for as these pods are not compatible. The cost of the most popular original line can be found for about 70 cent's each at Nespresso, while the most popular vertuo line pods are around $1.20 each. Off-brand pods for the orignal line can be found for about 30 cents each on Amazon.
