Evaluation Process for kitchen shears and kitchen scissors

We start each evaluation with a first impression from several testers. The testers can handle the shears in any way they like initially but are limited in time. We found that weight correlated highly with perceived value more than anything. We then put them through the rounds of cutting various items with varying degrees of difficulty in cutting. These short tests quickly changed the perceived values for the shears. Ease of cutting or sharpness was the highest correlator to value. Scissors that were able to cut everything were the favorites while others that did well with some things and poorly with others did not do well. For short-term evaluations, additional features like bottle openers and pull apart were of almost no value. Our longer term evalutaions includes every day use that grows with the confidence of the user. Almost all of the cheaper shears that did well initally quickly failed when additional testing occurred that put more stress on the shears. We found that if one is going to actually incorporate Kitchen Shears and Scissors into their daily kitchen rountines, you must find a good brand. If you are only doing basic cutting of packages in the kitchen, you can get away with generic shears. Some of the interesting long-term findings include bigger sized shears (in weight and length) loses its perceived value for daily simple use very quickly. Larger just becomes cumbersome. Smaller shears become the daily drivers when many choices are available but getting to that point may not be possible without the larger shears to get the users to trust using kitchen scissors in general. Testing doesn't stop until the shears break to the point they are useless or dangerous.

One special note, when scissors fail it can be quite dangerous. Having a tip of one of the blades break off in food or the handle break when squeezing through a thick piece of food can lead to injury. Take care when using Kitchen Shears and Scissors. Use quality products to reduce the chance they break or malfunction.
